New statistics show decline in UK traditional family life 1

New research by Mintel shows that about five million British parents (35% of the population) live in ‘non-traditional’ family set-ups.

Only 65% of parents are married or co-habiting.

The disappearance of the traditional family structure is more prevalent in couples aged 16-24. Just over half the women in this group are single mothers.

Social grouping seems to have a major effect. Only 18% of parents in the ‘AB’ group live in a non-traditional family, compared with 70% in the ‘E’ group.

Angela Huges, from Mintel, said:

“Family life has changed dramatically in recent years and many of the changes have led to extra stresses and strains for parents and children,” she said.

“The rising divorce rate, coupled with the growing trend for serial monogamy can mean family structures can be complicated, with children from several relationships being involved in step-families.”
