My Family eleventh series to be the last

The BBC has announced that the popular long-running sitcom My Family will bow out after its eleventh series has aired.

BBC One’s controller, Danny Cohen, said, “Now that all the Harper children have fled the nest we feel it’s time to make room for new comedies on BBC One. I can confirm that the eleventh series, coming to BBC One later this year, will be the last.”

A stellar cast — including Robert Lindsay, Zoe Wanamaker, Daniela Denby-Ashe, Kris Marshall and Gabriel Thompson — fused comedy with real family issues, including single parenthood, sexuality, drugs and race.

Created by American showrunner Fred Barron, it used US production methods including salaried writers, and exclusive use of the studio during the production period.

My Family may never have made it to our screens, as an initial pilot episode was not successful. It was the recasting of Robert and Zoe into the main roles that made the show and skyrocketed its success.

Fred claimed that Robert Lindsay’s character was inspired by his own father. My Family is now one of the longest running sitcoms on British TV; the first episode screened in September 2000.
