7 Creative Activities that Will Strengthen Family Relationships

This is a guest article by Annabelle Short.

If your family is like most families, you probably find yourself running every which way just about every single day…

When you finally have a little downtime at home, you find that you are all playing on your electronic devices or just doing your own thing – whatever that might be.

Between school, work, and extracurricular activities, life gets pretty hectic.

And, while your family might all see each other just about every day, are you actually spending valuable time together?

As families continue to decrease the amount of quality time they spend together, more and more couples are getting divorced and as a result, teachers and parents see behavioural problems in younger students.

The importance of family time goes far beyond just being able to say you do it…

It is important to the well-being of everyone in your family – both physical and mental.

So, now that you know the importance of family time, are you struggling with creative ideas for things to do together?

That’s okay – below we will detail a few of our favourite creative activities that will strengthen family relationships:

1. Spend a few hours crafting together

craft materials

Even if you are not artistic, crafting together is a fun way to make something totally crazy or just altogether interesting. With items like paper tags, personalised stickers, construction paper, glitter, and glue you can all work together to create your own family masterpiece.

??If you want, you could even make it a friendly competition to see who comes up with the most off-the-wall idea. ?

2. Have a game night

board game pieces

One of my favourite memories as a child was playing the word game, Scrabble, for hours with my dad.

Other nights, my younger brother and I would stay up for hours – sometimes even all night – and just play every board game we owned, over and over again.

Board games are a great way to give everyone a good mental workout while spending some quality time together. ??If you want to add to the fun, grab a few cheap prizes such as candy or silly ribbons and make it a true competition to see who can win the most games.

3. Movie night at home

There are few things more relaxing than snuggling up with your spouse and children and watching a great, family movie. Pop the popcorn, grab the soda and candy and make it feel as though you are watching right on the big screen! ?

4. Eat a fancy meal together

burger and chips

Even if you eat dinner together regularly, switch it up. Have one parent dress up as the chef and everyone work together to prepare a fancy meal, then everyone sits down at the table and can enjoy the fruits of their labour.?

5. Help out the community

Even if it is just one day each month, set a day aside to give back to the community. It is fulfilling to help those in need and it is also a great way to lead by example for your kids.

Take turns picking the organisation that you will volunteer with so that everyone can get the chance to help out whoever their heart desires.

6. Family Olympics

If your family is the more athletic or active type, try having a night of family Olympics. Either pick a few outside sports to play or maybe even set up a DIY obstacle course.

This is a great way to get everyone outside and moving!

7. Go for a walk

Take a walk around the neighbourhood or at a local park and enjoy the scenery. This is a great opportunity to get outside and to spend time just talking and enjoying each other’s company.

Family time does not have to be an elaborate ordeal, but just making an effort can make all the difference.

Take a vote to see which idea your family likes best and take turns choosing what family night activity will be next.
