Relieving boredom, strengthening family relationships with new activities

Many families in the Brazos Valley - both permanent residents and visitors - have prepared for Hurricane Rita in every way possible except those two dreaded words:
“I’m bored.”
If the power goes out, the doldrums will inevitably follow for kids when television, video games and computers become little more than room decorations. But a power outage can be a perfect opportunity to strengthen family relationships.
“It’s a wonderful time to come together as a family,” said Chrissy Hester, coordinator of administrative services for the College Station school district. “We don’t always have that kind of uninterrupted time to connect with each other.”
Many games that use ordinary household items - a deck of cards or dominoes, not to mention an active imagination - can help pass the time.
Of course, ensuring safety is paramount, but so is seeing that the whole family is entertained and happy. Games and activities, as well as talking and explaining what preparations were made, can help to alleviate fears that children may have.
