UK “porn capital of Europe”; teens aspire to glamour; porn use rocketing
September 19, 2005 by andymerrett
The author of book Pornified: How Pornography is Transforming Our Lives, Our Relationships and Our Families Pamela Paul has been looking at the effect of pornography on society, and an article the Times newspaper puts her study into a UK perspective.
It reveals that the UK has become the ‘porn capital of Europe’.
- The UK has access to 27 porn channels on TV - Germany has 5.
- 25% of all web searches are for increasingly hardcore pornography.
- Porn imagery now easily crosses into the mainstream.
- Young girls commonly aspire to glamour modelling, pole dancing and other professions in the sex industry.
- Many young men access hardcore pornography daily on the Internet, shaping their sexual cues and desires.
- Paul believes many women have tried to accept pornography “by kidding themselves that men look at it simply because they love women”
Paul calls for a ‘censure not censor’ approach, stigmatising porn and pushing it back out of the mainstream to the ‘adult’ realm where it traditionally lives.
The UK Government’s crackdown on web sites that mix pornography and violence is a postive start.
“Hopefully my book can go some way to exposing the reality of porn and its effects, too.” says Paul.
