Don’t neglect bedtime stories: reading to children makes them smarter, research suggests

Quite apart from the bonding that occurs between parent and child during the shared time of a bedtime story, new research suggests that reading to your baby or child can actually improve their intelligence.
Both frequency and style of reading should be improved.
The style should be highly intonated, with changes in pitch and expression of voice. Making the voice interesting does the same for the story you are telling your children.
According to PreSchoolRainbow.org “the more words, colors and concepts young children are exposed to, the more the brain cells connect to each other. The more connections there are, the more the brain can do.”
Tips for parents:
- Read at least three stories per day to your child
- Use lots of different words as you describe pictures
- Play games with the words
- Keep reading the stories that your children love
